Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Worcester


Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Worcester,
born pre-1397.

2nd Baron Abergavenny (or Baron Bergavenny).
He mar 1411 to Isabel le Despenser [born 1400, descendant of Edward III].
Created Earl of Worcester in 1421.
He was killed 18 March 1422 (new style year) at the Siege of Meaux in NC France.
His body was taken back to England and he was buried 25 April 1422 at Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire.
Title of Earl of Worcester extinct.
Title of Baron Abergavenny went to his son-in-law Edward Neville, who was numbered either 1st Baron Abergavenny or 3rd Baron Abergavenny.
Isabel remarried in 1423 to his 1st cousin Richard Beauchamp, 5th Earl of Warwick.
In memory of her 1st husband, Isabel erected c.1430 the beautiful Beauchamp Chantry at Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire.
Richard and Isabel had issue:


  1. Elizabeth Beauchamp,
    born 16 Dec 1415 [mother age 14 when conceived].
    She mar Edward Neville, 3rd Baron Abergavenny [born c.1417] and had issue.




The Beauchamp Chantry, Tewkesbury Abbey

The Beauchamp Chantry, Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire.
Erected c.1430 by Isabel le Despenser in memory of her 1st husband Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Worcester (killed 1422).
Also called the Warwick Chantry, because by her 2nd husband she became Countess of Warwick.
It is thought to have once had figures of Isabel and her two husbands, but these are gone.
