Henry Blennerhassett, of Dublin and Tralee

  

Henry Blennerhassett, attorney, listed in Dublin in [Watson's Almanack, 1765].
Note his 1st cousin Rowland Blennerhassett, later 1st Baronet. Rowland was also an attorney in Dublin for a time.



Henry Blennerhassett,
"Harry", of Dublin and Tralee,
born 1734.
He was a solicitor in Dublin.
He was educ King's Inns, Dublin. See entry in index. He became an attorney of the court of King's Bench. Admitted in Easter Term 1757.

He mar 1stly to Mary Poujade.
They mar 21 Dec 1758, according to letter from Basil O'Connell, 21 July 1969.
Marriage settlement is dated 5 Jan 1759. Witnessed by his 1st cousin Rowland Blennerhassett, later 1st Baronet. (Both Henry and Rowland were Kerry attorneys in Dublin for a time.)
Henry is listed on p.25 of [Watson's Almanack, 1765] at Digges St, Dublin.
He is listed in [Wilson's Directory, 1771, p.105] at Aungier St, Dublin. His 1st cousin Rowland Blennerhassett, later 1st Baronet, also has an office at Aungier St (probably same office), though his family home is now moved back to Co.Kerry.
Henry is party to [Deeds of 1774 and 1777] with his 1st cousin Arthur Blennerhassett, of Fortfield.
He is listed in [Dublin Directory, 1783, p.99] at Aungier St, Dublin.

Henry and Mary separated. Deed of separation 26 Mar 1784.
He is party to [Deed of 1789].
He is listed in [Dublin Directory, 1795, p.128] at 9 South Cumberland St, Dublin. He is listed in this as attorney of multiple courts (King's Bench, Common Pleas, Exchequer), and also Solicitor in Chancery.

Mary dies, 1802-1803:
Her will dated 1 Jan 1802. Described as of St.Andrew St, Dublin.
She died 1802-1803.
Her will proved 25 May 1803.
Will burnt in 1922. But notes survive in [D950/1/9]. See pp.22-23 and p.47 and pp.48-49 and p.50 and p.52.

Henry mar 2ndly, 31 Oct 1803, to Ellen Tuohy [born 1752, widow of Thomas O'Connell, MD].
They lived at Tralee, but he still had an office in Dublin.
Henry Blennerhassett, attorney of the King's Bench, is listed in [Dublin Almanac, 1806, p.113] at 1 Anglesea St, Dublin.
Still listed with office at 1 Anglesea St in [Treble Almanac, 1812, p.119] and up to his death in 1816.

Henry dies, 1816:
He died 15 Apr 1816, age 82 yrs.
He was bur Ballyseedy church.
His will was proved 1816 (Henry of city of Dublin). It would be burnt in 1922.
It took a while to fix his entry in the Dublin Almanac. Henry Blennerhassett, attorney of the King's Bench, is still listed at 1 Anglesea St, Dublin, in [Treble Almanac] 1817 and 1818 edns. Gone in 1819 edn. (The fact his entry vanished soon after 1816 proves this is our Henry.)
Ellen outlived all of her sons.
She is listed as of Tralee at death.

Ellen dies, 1836:
Her will dated 17 Feb 1836. Ellen of Tralee.
She died 24 Feb 1836, age 84, at her house in Tralee.
Will pr 16 June 1836. Would be burnt in 1922. Notes in Irish will register 1836 survive. "All monies [to] Mary O'Connell." (her dau).
Executor of her will is Rickard O'Connell. This must be her grandson Rickard O'Connell (born 1808).
Her dau Mary died only a few months later.
Henry and his 1st wife Mary had issue:


  1. John Henry Blennerhassett,
    "John Harry", of Tralee.


  2. Mary Blennerhassett,
    born Ireland, 1767.
    [Burkes Irish, 1976] says born 1764.
    Age in 1851 census would say born 1776.
    She mar 1791 to Capt. Thomas Blennerhassett and had issue.


  3. Charlotte Blennerhassett.
    She mar Rowland Eagar.
    Mar licence dated 1793. See note in [D950/1/9, p.25].

Correspondence of Daniel O'Connell



Letter to Ellen Tuohy's daughter Mary O'Connell from her husband Daniel O'Connell, 19 Nov 1803.
People are making fun of her middle-aged mother for marrying the elderly Henry.

Letter from Mary O'Connell to Daniel O'Connell, 2 Dec 1803.
She wants the marriage kept secret. But Daniel has already told her in a letter of 24 Nov 1803 that everyone knows about it.
This letter says Henry's son John Henry is also making fun of the match.
Mary calls her new stepfather "Papa". Later she calls him "Papa Harry".
