Shallee House, Co.Tipperary, in 1855.
The family emigrated to New Zealand by 1865.
His father died in New Zealand in 1869.
George set up home back in Shallee House.
Either he came back to Ireland, or (more likely) he never went to New Zealand.
Kathleen Wicks
thought he went to New Zealand and returned to Ireland when his father died and he inherited Shallee.
But surely if the family went they would have
sold it.
So more likely George never went, but stayed
in Ireland to make a go of the old family property.
Listed at mar 1871 as of Shallee.
He mar 11 Oct 1871
to
Caroline Braddell [born 1834, Co.Cork].

This must be George Cashel of Shallee (bapt 1843).

Identification of photo:
- The back
says it is
"G.H. Cashel"
and then in different writing:
"father of Robert Cashel, grandfather of Eleanor and Bessie Cashel,
great-grandfather of Marion G.C. Bromley
(née Cameron)".
- So one might think it is the grandfather of Eleanor and Bessie Cashel,
who was
George Cashel, born 1780,
married Grace Wilson, died 1855.
- Except there are problems.
First, Eleanor and Bessie's father is George not Robert.
(They have a brother Robert.)
- Second, it looks a later photo than 1855 and a younger man than age 75.
I gave the photo to ChatGPT with no other information
and it thinks it dates to "about 1865-1875"
and the man is "about 28-35 years old".
- Returning to "G.H. Cashel" in the original writing,
the conclusion must be that
it is the brother of Eleanor and Bessie, George Cashel of Shallee (bapt 1843).
- The photographer is at
Fishergate, Preston, Lancashire.
Might have been taken when travelling to or from New Zealand.
