Edward Despenser, 1st Baron Despenser

Edward Despenser, 1st Baron Despenser,
born 24 March 1336.

He fought with The Black Prince at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.
He was summoned to Parliament as a Baron in 1357.
He mar Elizabeth de Burghersh [dau of Bartholomew de Burghersh, 2nd Baron Burghersh].
He died 11 November 1375, at Cardiff.
He was buried in Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire.
In his memory his widow Elizabeth erected the beautiful chantry, Trinity Chapel, in Tewkesbury Abbey.
Elizabeth died 1409.
She was buried in Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire.
They had issue:


  1. Margaret le Despenser.
    She mar Robert de Ferrers, 5th Baron Ferrers of Chartley and had issue.


  2. Elizabeth le Despenser, born 1365.
    She mar John Arundel and had issue.


  3. Thomas Despenser, 1st Earl of Gloucester,
    born 1373.

The chantry of Lord Edward Despenser, Tewkesbury Abbey

The chantry of Edward Despenser, 1st Baron Despenser (died 1375). Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire.
Called Trinity Chapel.
There is a kneeling figure of Edward Despenser in stone on the roof of the chantry.
